The Lotus and the Dragonfly

The Lotus and the Dragonfly
I recently picked up a card for a friend of mine who had lost the love of his life through cancer. The card is of the original painting by Jodi Bergsma, entitled ‘Mystery’. What the painting represents is that there cannot be a new beginning unless there is an ending.
The lotus flower symbolizes new birth. The dragonfly emerging from the lotus flower represents maturity and a depth of character; a self realization that has, at its source, a mental and emotional maturity which brings about a deeper understanding to the meaning of life. Sometimes this can only come about after we have weathered a most disruptive event which turns our world upside down. The dragonfly also symbolizes power and poise. It is able to accomplish its objectives with elegance and grace. It also symbolizes defeat of self created illusions. The iridescence property of the wings shows itself in different colors depending on the light falling on it. This property is believed to be symbolic of the end of one’s self created illusions and a clear vision into the realities of life, which can only come about when one is willing to put aside the ego. Only then can we truly encounter and embrace self discovery. And finally, the dragonfly represents living in the now! By living in the moment we are aware of who we are, where we are, what we are doing, what we want, what we wish to discard and to make informed choices on a moment-to-moment basis.
After the loss of my best friend and husband of 27 years, I was faced with creating a new life for myself or choosing to wallow in self pity. I chose to honor that which had been, that which had ended, and to make a new beginning. This included re-education to help others through Biofeedback, Psychosomatic Energetics and a move from a small Alberta town to the big city of Calgary, re-establishing myself and my practice. At that time I had no social network in Calgary. It was frightening, but I chose to trust my inner guidance system. I am thankful for the wonderful new life I have created; a life which has purpose.
In my practice, Psychosomatic Energetics is a wonderful tool which can help one let go of the past so as to assist one to move forward in creating a healthier life – physically, emotionally, mentally and socially. The truth is that we cannot undo the past. We can however come to peace with it. In regards to tomorrow, well, the stories we tell ourselves are only that – stories.
Many people spend much of their time reliving the past and or projecting into the future. By coming to peace and resolving emotional conflicts which are still creating stress and or havoc in life, one is able to truly embrace new beginnings. So when you see a dragonfly this summer, take a moment to reflect on the wonderful messages this humble insect represents.
